Cable housing (oven referred to as the outer cable) is 3/8 inch diameter and has a white nylon inner sleeve to reduce friction and protect the cable form wear. The nylon white inner has been swaged together with the main housing using the steel end as shown: Note A

Note B: When the housing is tied into a knot the white nylon inner slides into main part of the housing at the cut end (opposite end of steel end). If the cable housing is cut to size by first tying into a knot; then when the knot is released a part of the nylon white inner will be left protruding.
